The Gathering for Justice was founded in 2005 by Harry Belafonte after he witnessed a news report of a 5 year old black girl being handcuffed and arrested in her Florida classroom for “being unruly”. The Gathering’s mission is to build a movement to end child incarceration while working to eliminate the racial inequities in the criminal justice system that enliven mass incarceration.
The Sandy Hook Promise was created to prevent gun-related deaths due to crime, suicide and accidental discharge so that no other parent experiences the senseless, horrific loss of their child. Our Approach is to build a national movement of parents, schools and community organizations engaged and empowered to deliver gun violence prevention programs and mobilize for the passage of sensible state and national policy.
STOP is an outgrowth of a United Nations anti-trafficking unit that went by the same acronym (Special Trafficking Operations Program). The experiences in Bosnia and Liberia led to the realization that sex trafficking across borders is a global problem, and that rescuing victims is not enough as local authorities frequently treat many of those rescued, as criminals or immigration law breakers.
