Introduction to July Peace on Earth Day

This Peace on Earth Day is inspired by the book of the month for July, The World is Blue. Written by the living legend and renowned oceanographer, Sylvia A. Earle, Blue recounts Dr. Earle’s indefatigable mission to teach people, around the world, how to fully comprehend the ocean’s vital importance to all of us on the planet. She shows the ways the ocean’s health is directly related to our collective health; and why truly understanding this scientific fact is essential to protecting these extraordinary bodies of water.

“Knowing is caring.”

Earle’s words ringing, we have collected links so you can read about robo-fish hoovering up microplastics; hear a haunting song, Water Is Life—Mni Wičoni, honoring the courageous water defenders; learn about the painstaking re-seeding efforts to bring back the majestic kelp forests; get some life lessons from an unforgettable actual octopus; listen to a song about an imaginary one; watch a riveting short dance video about the catastrophic effects the ocean’s warming inflicts in the Arctic; be uplifted by the ongoing research into monitoring and protecting the Great Lakes; and tune-in to a podcast about the oceans of ethereal sounds created by humongous singing whales possessing magnificent repertoires of watery song fests, auditory signaling and surreal noises—ever hear a whale snore?

We invite you to peruse WOVEN’s July selections–either dip a toe, or immerse yourself fully!
