Introduction to November Peace on Earth Day

Robin Wall Kimmerer’s brilliant book, Braiding Sweetgrass: Indigenous Wisdom, Scientific Knowledge, and the Teachings of Plants, strikes the right chord for this season of Thanksgiving, when we celebrate the harvest, feast on the bountiful gifts Mother Earth has provided and express our boundless gratitude for her abundant love and nourishment.

Dr. Kimmerer delves deeply into the transformative power of being thankful and returning the loving kindness to our 4.54-billion-year-old mama! Gratitude literally feels good–dopamine and serotonin get released when we experience it.

Appropriately, November is Native American Heritage Month–a time to honor the art, culture, traditions and activism of an extensive network of Indigenous nations, tribes and clans. See the stunning Totem Carving in front of the Fenimore Museum. Visit the National Museum of the American Indian, discover riveting Native dancing—Ghost Dance, Dance for All People and She Who Never Dances Alone. Be amazed by the rockin’ documentary Rumble: The Indians Who Rocked the World. Admire and applaud those who have been and still are dedicated to the noble work of planet protection and restoration–replanting, reseeding and rewilding from the tiniest plants to huge trees–including The Mushroom People, The Man Who Planted Trees and the Crees that manage Canada’s old-growth Boreal forests. Learn about the Territory Acknowledgment movement and the intrepid Cherokees demanding a delegate—as promised by Congress 187 years ago!
